The Bedford County School Board’s dress code policy is outdated and does not reflect current trends. This makes purchasing school appropriate clothes at any retail store incredibly difficult. It is unreasonable to expect students to buy an entirely different wardrobe for school and home. While it is understandable for students to be held to a certain standard of dress for school, the dress code should not stifle student individuality and creativity. Teachers have more important responsibilities than policing student attire, and students do not need another reason to dislike school. Reasonable standards for dress code should include covering for modesty, and prohibiting anything violent, profane, or illegal. Instead, students aren’t even being allowed to wear shirts with patterns. Students should not be held to a standard that not even teachers are held to.
