Rethink Theta- Calling on Theta Nationals to rethink their stances in the Kappa Chapter
The Issue
Recently, a University of Kansas student organization, Kappa Alpha Theta, punished a member for her conservative ideologies that she expressed on social media. We are calling for Theta to reevaluate their mission statement and take it into consideration during this time. The mission statement on their national website reads, "Theta isn't like other organizations. Our members are different: we aren't afraid to stand out, to make a difference together. We are women supporting women, and we inspire one another to be our best selves." Apparently they do not feel as if women with opposing viewpoints should be supported but rather penalized. Barring and placing members on a probationary status over their beliefs will only continue to divide the community politically. We encourage fraternity and sorority chapters, as well as other student organizations, to foster cultures that support and educate all members. As a chapter, the University of Kansas College Republicans support the freedom of speech and continue to facilitate conversations and dialogue in a number of ways across campus. We are an advocate for students and the liberties of our constitution. The actions of the Kappa Chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta are completely unacceptable, and we hope that this organization will revisit this inappropriate punishment and issue a formal apology for mistreating a student of the KU community, and more importantly, a member of their sisterhood.
