This petition is meant to outline the support by the Wentworth community to our dear staff members who have recently been laid off by the School. We hope that Wentworth Institute of Technology reverses their decision of terminating the positions of Carrie Yates and Priscilla Saul.

During the COVID-19 Global Pandemic, Wentworth has made strong commitments to ensure that faculty and students are minimally impacted while delivering the highest quality education. The School has promised to deliver their best, all while hoping to prevent cataclysmic budget cuts that would hurt the distinct values that Wentworth holds itself to. This meant retaining commitment to keeping staff on board to ensure students can continue with their studies.

In recent days, students and faculty have learned the school has reversed this policy by laying off two long-time employees in the Department of Architecture, Carrie Yates and Priscilla Saul. This has come to a shock to students, faculty and alumni, who are left confused about their termination. We are hoping that the Office of the Provost & President Mark Thompson will reverse this decision and reinstate their positions immediately.

Our community will no longer be the same without them, as they have gone above and beyond their duties to help make Wentworth a better place. These staff members have been crucial to retaining the success of students in the program. They have positively impacted the culture of our campus at a time where the school has made commitments to improving the environment that we congregate in. Many students recall going to Carrie or Priscilla when they felt down, and many can cite them as a core reason to why they remained in school. For years, up to thousands of students have regarded these two staff members as family.

We are also unsure of how the Department of Architecture will even succeed given that these employees have been the foundation to the program’s operations. They have also risked their lives as essential workers during the pandemic to ensure that our school keeps running. Without them, the Administration has seemingly jeopardized the education for hundreds of students.

In many situations, they become the liaison between students, student clubs and organizations, as well as prospective students and their families. With the absence of Carrie and Priscilla, there will be an enormous disruption to the planning and organizing of future student events, disbursement of any information that regards the operation of the department, department lectures and events, as well and information about open houses and curriculum for future B.S.Arch and M.Arch students.

We also hope that the school refrains from laying off additional employees, as we are in a global pandemic and job security is a grave concern for many. Furthermore, we demand that the School take the initiative to improve the conditions on campus by supporting faculty who are vital in shaping our social and economic environment. This includes the two said members.
