Pass/Fail Second wave COVID-19

The Issue

Should students continue to be expected to put forth A quality papers when the conditions that they are given to work in are less than mediocre? With schools, coffee shops and libraries closed, how can our educational establishments continue to apply the normal grading scale to us students during abnormal times? This petition seeks a remedy to this issue. Either they consider reinstating the pass/fall option for these current fall and winter semesters or create a unique grading scale tailored to the COVID-19 pandemic. Professors and school staff do not take a pay cut throughout this pandemic. Why should we the students not also be protected during the latter pandemic as well? I for one have just received my first ever failed grade after three years at Concordia university despite maintaining a 3.9 GPA. The unfortunate truth is that our academic careers are completely vulnerable to circumstances beyond our control. We the students should not be punished for the unrealistic expectation of having to adapt to a totally new method of online learning. The transition from in class learning to online learning is one that is more difficult for some than others and students cannot be generalized in this regard. An even more pressing matter is the reality that many students lack adequate study environments and reliable internet connections. I argue that it is simply unrealistic for all students to be expected to adapt and overcome the many challenges involved with online learning while rigorously trying to complete a semester's worth of already challenging material (assignments, midterms, finals, participation, etc).
