MMSD Schools Should Offer Outdoor Homecomings 2021

MMSD Schools Should Offer Outdoor Homecomings 2021
The Issue
The Madison (WI) Metropolitan School District and the high school principals have announced that there will be no homecoming dances for any MMSD high schools.
After not being able to go to high school for almost a year and a half, missing out on sports, dances, school events, and just some of the best years of our adolescence, this has been an extremely challenging time for students. The lack of social opportunities has exacerbated mental health challenges and our community has lost many friends and classmates.
Now that MMSD is back in school full-time, requiring masks when indoors and not requiring masks when outdoors (as per CDC & Dane Public Health guidelines) students have been looking forward to having the first homecoming and sense of normalcy that has been absent for a long time. While we accept that an indoor homecoming with masks might won’t be possible at this time, there is no reason that MMSD schools can’t offer an outdoor homecoming dances for their respective schools at the most suitable location of their choice (football fields, basketball courts, parking lots). MMSD high schools will be the ONLY ones in the county not allowed to have a Homecoming dance. ALL Big 8 and Badgerland Conference schools are.
The reality is that in the absence of the school sponsored dance, many students will still get together and are likely to be indoors and unmasked resulting in more potential risk than an outdoor, supervised school sponsored dance. Also, lots of students will not have the resources or opportunities to organize or participate in any of those parties/gatherings. Is this equitable?
FOLLOW THE SCIENCE MMSD. This would in no way violate any CDC, Dane Health or MMSD Covid guidelines. Badger Football had 80,000 fans in the stadium not required to mask. SO WHY SAY NO? We could even be masked to be extra safe.
STUDENTS: SPEAK UP NOW & MAKE OUR VOICES HEARD. Get your parents on board. We deserve to have HOCO.
ALL MMSD HS STUDENTS & PARENTS: Sign and share this petition if you think MMSD high schools should offer outdoor homecomings and high school students shouldn’t be ripped off of yet one more important high school experience!
