School Calendars Matter!

Did you know that most of  today’s schools are operating on a 200 year old school calendar meant for a farming society when children helped work in the fields during the summer season? Do you find it  impossible to retain all the information you’ve learned after a 2 and a half month break? How is this good for students?

Research shows that a 45-15 school calendar would be better for students because…

• Students can retain more knowledge over the course of a modified year round calendar.
• Students can be involved with extracurricular activities more often.
• Everyone can have more frequent breaks throughout the year.

I am proposing that our district change to a 45-15 calendar for its high schools. I believe a 45-15 calendar will allow students to: maintain better grades during each quarter and participate in extracurricular activities or work  during breaks, creating an overall balanced life for teens.
