Why this petition matters

SUNY Oneonta students are only into their second week of classes and they are already scavenging and circling the parking lots to find a spot. Arriving early to ensure a parking spot is not even a guarantee. Over the last four years, student parking spots have been given and taken from students even though students and those students who drive to campus are the majority, and thus need an adequate amount of spots. Considering the idea that more students will be enrolled and accepted into SUNY Oneonta and have been in the last couple of years, current and future students should not have to worry about being late to class or work because of parking.

Every year or semester students purchase parking passes so they are able to commute to campus and park without a time limit or fine. In addition to the concern about parking, students should not have to worry about being ticketed for parking in a (consistently) open Faculty or Staff spot because there were no open student spots. No student should have to face being late to class because of lack of adequate parking nor should they have to wait for other students to get out of class and leave in order to find a spot. While there is the acknowledgment that faculty, staff, and administration need spots, the lack of adequate student parking has perpetually been an issue at SUNY Oneonta. With a student-to-faculty ratio of (at least) 16 to 1 and a faculty and staff population of about 1500 people, there are enough parking spaces to go around.
