Revoke the "No Tank Top" Rule at URI Gyms

The Issue

We, the students and faculty at URI, believe that banning tank tops at URI fitness centers should be revoked. By doing this, we would promote a more comfortable environment where individuals can feel confident in their own skin. The University of Rhode Island is an institution that promotes diversity and acceptance for all people, and by having a rule that prohibits people from wearing what they feel comfortable in goes against this belief. The National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA.com) states that wearing tank tops or sleeveless shirts while working out can help prevent heat exhaustion and work to prevent sudden death in collegiate conditioning sessions. The concern for heat exhaustion is very great, especially in the Mackal Field House, where there is no air conditioning. As a university, we should be aware of issues like these and work to prevent them. One of the reasons this rule was originally put into place was to help maintain clean facilities. However, we believe that adding in more performance wipe stations and stressing hygiene will be just as effective; while still promoting individual comfort that allows all patrons to wear the clothes they prefer to wear at the gym. By signing this petition, I hereby support the revocation of the "Full T-Shirt" rule in the fitness centers on campus.
