@ISD191: "The majority of the student body's needs are being met, we simply want; structure, order, safety, Campus Supervisors present, and contracts settled!"
Supporters,
If you've read this far, I ask that you read this entire update as it'll contain some important information regarding our cause.
I was present for the entirety of the meeting. I can tell you that it was disappointing, but at the same time encouraging.
First off, during the open session from 5:45-6:15 there was one gentlemen in particular that stood out. He was an older gentlemen who simply wanted to say that Burnsville High School has become a violent place, and that discipline is lacking. Kind of fits the petition, doesn't it? The Superintendent shut him down, asking for further specific examples and asking how he knew of this. Do not be fooled, everyone, Burnsville High School has physical altercations almost daily! And yes, on November 15th, there was a fight that saw 26 police officers respond.
Second, there was little support from the Superintendent regarding Campus Supervisors. Late in the meeting, Superintendent Amoroso was speaking of how safety is a top priority. She also said that the district cares about our students and staff. Showing how much she cares about our staff, she went on to say that our funds could be used for staff with more "proactive methods" while also describing Campus Supervisors as "walking around the school looking for trouble." With all due respect, Superintendent Amoroso, I fear you have a shallow understanding of the daily duties that a Campus Supervisor performs, as well as how a few go above and beyond to provide support for our students.
Additionally, the district and Superintendent went on to show that they care about our safety so much as to say that an implication to the removal of Campus Supervisors is we "require a mindset change." No, Superintendent Amoroso, what we require is safety and security through Campus Supervisors and School Resource Officers - eyes, ears, and manpower.
Finally, I would like to add that Vice Chairwoman Currier showed potential signs of support for our petition. She asked Superintendent Amoroso how she intends to explain to students the removal of Campus Supervisors, and how she plans to address our safety concerns. Superintendent Amoroso went on to explain how teachers and administration will be used. My specific example for how administration will NOT be beneficial is this; when the student was tazed on campus a few weeks ago, FIVE Campus Supervisors were present to help address the scene and maintain control. ONE administrator was present, ONE.
I am in need of additional help and ideas. We need to capture the attention of the School Board, the Superintendent, and the ISD191 Community as a whole - even more than we already have. Please, feel free to email me at dostt1@isd191.org to become involved with saving our Campus Supervisors, or to present additional ideas or feedback.
I felt helpless at one point during the meeting tonight, and that the cause was lost. As I was leaving, a teacher came up to me, thanked me, and after speaking and discovering that I was discouraged, used a phrase that regained my motivation -
"How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time."
We must power through this together, as one, to better our school, our district, and our community.
Thank you all for your continued support of our Campus Supervisors & teachers.
