The Issue

We, the undersigned students of the University of Dallas, respectfully petition the University Administration to revise the current move-out policy, which requires students to vacate their dorms and campus apartments by 8:00 PM on the last day of final exams. We propose that the official move-out deadline be extended to 12:00 PM on the day following the final day of exams.

Currently, many UD students have final exams scheduled anywhere between 8:00 AM - 8:00 PM on May 14, and are still expected to pack up and move out by 8:00 PM that same day. (**Note**, those with exams at 8:00 PM are given to midnight to moveout). This applies to students in both traditional residence halls and on-campus apartments.

Given the academic rigor at UD—especially during finals week—students often spend all of “dead day” and the preceding weekend preparing for exams, projects, and presentations. This leaves little to no time for packing or cleaning. For many, the only time available to pack up their entire dorm or apartment is after their final exams have ended, sometimes late into the evening.

This compressed timeline is not only logistically difficult but also emotionally taxing. It does not give students the time to properly rest, pack, clean, or say goodbye to friends and roommates after a long and challenging academic year.

This proposed extension also aligns with the standard practice at many colleges and universities across the United States, where students are given until the day after their final exams to move out of campus housing.

We believe that extending the move-out deadline by just one day would significantly reduce stress, improve student wellbeing, and allow for a better transition from campus to home.

If you support this change—whether for this academic year or future years—please add your name to this petition and help us advocate for a more reasonable move-out policy.
