Student called NIGGER 2 times in front of class and teacher condones racial slur.

The Issue

This petition arises from a deeply personal and disturbing incident that occurred at William B Travis High School in Austin, TX. I have family members that attend this school, and I am very concerned for them and disturbed by the racial events that keep happening. On Tuesday, 3/19/24, a black female student was subjected to racial slurs by another student “I feel sorry for you cause your black” and called her a NIGGER twice in front of the entire class and threatened “I’m going to kill you” while motioning a stabbing motion to her stomach. Shockingly, this racist act was condoned by their science teacher who agreed that the offending student "had a good reason" for such behavior.

The victimized student was subsequently removed from Ms. Quick's class and has not been allowed back since. This is an unacceptable response to such an egregious incident of racism within our educational institution. Instead of addressing the perpetrator and those who enabled her, it is the victim who has suffered further. Her parents were also not contacted by the administrator, [Redacted] and were only made aware of the incident by their student. When parent visited the campus on Thursday after being made aware of the incident, an option from administrator was to move the victim to another school (for her being racially bullied). Mediation efforts between victim/student and victim/teacher are remedies in place but not with parent present. The victim has been told by mediators to “allow the student grace” and “ maybe forgive the teacher because she meant no harm”. This grooming and false encouragement and support comes from non- African American/Black adults who have the best interest of keeping this incident and dozens of other incident quiet on Travis campus, making the victim out to be the problem and the target because she does not accept being called a NIGGER or threatened to be killed.
The victimizer is of Islamic/Arabic culture, which are afforded many supports and protections against racial discriminations on Travis campus, including reported designated prayer rooms. All cultures should be awarded the same equal supports and protections at Travis.

This incident is not isolated but part of an ONGOING hidden issue at Travis where racial mistreatment of African American/Black students and teachers continues unchecked. It's time we bring this issue into light and demand accountability. This is the same school and district that recently, only after the student advocated publicly, removed Christina Steele as principal for using racial slurs toward her, an African American student, and her grandparents.

We call on school authorities to immediately remove both the offending student and complicit teacher from their positions as a clear message against racism in our schools. We also urge them to implement comprehensive anti-racism training for all staff members to prevent such incidents from recurring.

Stand with us against racism; sign this petition demanding justice for victims like this young girl whose education should never be compromised by hate or prejudice. It could be someone you know.
