The Issue

Good government must stay open, transparent, and follow the charter accordingly. Unfortunately, this is currently not the case in Manchester, where the existing governance structure is not being adhered to.

Manchester operates under a Council-Manager form of government, which requires a clear division of responsibilities. According to this system, the mayor should not have administrative powers; yet, the mayor of Manchester is handling a range of duties that contradict this model. Specifically, the mayor controls responsibilities such as managing the City's Facebook account, publishing the monthly newsletter, and altering the City's logo, which should not fall within the mayor's purview.

This misuse of administrative control undermines the very principles of transparency and accountability. It's essential for the integrity of Manchester’s governance that these duties are transferred to appropriate administrative personnel as outlined in the city's charter.

We urgently call on the Manchester City Council to take immediate action by stripping the mayor of these administrative duties. By doing so, we ensure our city's governance remains transparent, accountable, and in strict adherence to our established charter. This step will realign duties with roles and allow the city to function as intended, with decisions reflecting the interests of the community rather than a single individual.

By signing this petition, you are standing up for a fair, transparent, and charter-compliant city government. Let’s make Manchester a model of good governance!
