Stricter Laws For Children Who Commit Serious Offences

Stricter Laws For Children Who Commit Serious Offences
The issue
Hi my name is Stacey Langhans and I am 24 years old originally from Cranbourne Victoria.
I am the sister of Jason Langhans who was Murdered in Tooradin.
it’s been 2 years and 3 months since Jason was murdered.
We watched him every day on life support for 3 weeks, in the beginning we didn’t understand the seriousness of what had fully happend until Jason had undergone 3 brain surgeries and we had been told he was stabbed in the head with a screw driver.
On the 9th of April we made the decision to turn Jason’s life support off as we were told he would never walk, talk or do anything on his own again. Anybody who knows Jason, knows that would have never been an option for him. We then lost Jason on the 10th of April and it was the worst day of our life, we lost our 17 year old, son, brother, grandson, cousin & friend. Jason was an innocent bystander, Jason was caring, loving, kind and had a cheeky character at times but most of all he was innocent. The last two years we have attended court hearings after court hearings, our lives revolving around constant pain and at the end there was no justice for Jason. A lot of us thought today would be the justice we needed, we believed today Jason’s killer would get what he deserved and he didn’t. All he got was a slap on the wrist. why? Because he is a refugee, he’s 17, he has mental health problems so how many excuses are we going to give these people who commit these crimes?
What about the distress he has caused my family? What about the night mares and sleepless nights my parents have had?
What about the mental health issues we are now faced with? WHAT ABOUT THE VICTIMS?
This is the same 17 year old who got in a car underage while under the influence of drugs and alcohol drove from Geelong all the way to Tooradin, (already committed a crime in its self and put families at risk on the road) to then attend a party he wasn’t invited to, take a screw driver with obviously the intent to use it. He had every intention to do what he did. We have lost Jason for life and all he gets 4 years with 2 already served and then he can apply for parole. When will this end? When will enough be enough? The government wonders why the kids of our future are running around committing these crimes it’s because they are literally given the opportunity to get away with murder. Something needs to change and if not for my family, the next because we aren’t the first and we definitely won’t be the last.
Justice was not served for Jason, but maybe if we all use our voice we can make a difference for someone else. Jason’s name can then be remembered as a legacy for change.
We love you Jason, forever and always.
