The Issue

Our lives were shattered on July,1st 2023, the day our almost 6-year-old daughter, Quinn, drowned in the Eel River while in someone else's "care". Tragically, despite wearing a life vest I had provided for her safety, Quinn lost her life due to inadequate supervision by (ir)responsible adults. Quinn, along with two friends, had somehow found their way to the dangerous rapids. While her friends were thankfully saved further downstream by alert strangers, our daughter wasn't so fortunate. Yet shockingly, those who were meant to be watching Quinn saw no legal action against them and faced no accountability for her loss, even after admittedly drinking alcohol while "caring" for young children, and were also allowed to refuse a breathalyzer when asked by Law enforcement.

Every year in the United States, around 3,600 fatal drownings occur, with one in five being children under the age of 14, as per the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This indicates an alarming reality - that children can easily become victims under inappropriate and negligent supervision. We urge stricter enforcement of accountability for those whose neglect leads to the loss of young and innocent lives.

This petition calls for the strengthening of laws that can effectively penalize those found guilty of negligent supervision leading to avoidable deaths. It's time that those responsible for the safety of someone else's child face harsh legal consequences for their inattention. Accountability is not just for an individual, but also for the whole of society to ensure that this tragedy does not repeat itself.

Please sign this petition to help enforce stricter accountability for fatal negligence during child supervision and ensure that no more lives are unnecessarily lost due to negligence. Imagine if this were your child who died while in the care of someone you trusted to be a responsible adult. Instead of watching over your precious child, they failed to supervise and protect her, allowing her to wander into the rapids. Then, to make it worse, law enforcement and county officials do nothing.

They try to label this as an "accident". An accident is when you throw the ball and it bounces into the window causing it to break, NOT when you take young children to a river and let them wander off to their death. That is no accident, that is a MISTAKE. A very very big one that needs some accountability. People are arrested and charged every day for driving under the influence "in case" someone is killed (rightfully so), yet Quinn actually lost her life due to improper supervision. It makes absolutely no sense. We lost her forever, not just once, but every single day.
