The Issue

Crimes against children can have lifelong emotional, psychological, and physical impacts. I know this to be true, having witnessed the devastating effects that inadequate sentencing can have on the most vulnerable members of our society—our children. Each case of child abuse that goes under-punished sends a signal that justice was not served and that the safety of our children is not taken as seriously as it should be.

In recent years, there has been a disconcerting rise in crimes against children in Canada. According to Statistics Canada, incidents involving child victims have been steadily increasing, and yet the sentencing for perpetrators does not seem to be keeping pace with the severity of these offenses. This dissonance leaves communities feeling unsafe and puts more children at risk of becoming victims.

Current sentencing laws are often too lenient when it comes to crimes against children, whether it be physical abuse, sexual exploitation, or neglect. These laws need to reflect the gravity of the wrongdoing and deliver justice by imposing stricter, more appropriate sentences for offenders. Strengthening these laws will not only serve as a deterrent but will also provide a sense of justice and closure to victims and their families.

Our children deserve to grow up in a society where their safety is of the utmost concern. We must call upon Canadian lawmakers to reevaluate and revise existing legislation to ensure harsher sentencing for crimes against minors. A significant change in sentencing laws can create a safer, more just environment for our children to grow.

Please sign this petition to urge the Canadian government to take immediate action in fortifying sentencing laws to better protect our children. Together, we can work towards a safer future for them.
