The Issue

Another tragic helicopter crash has taken the lives of an entire family,  including three children, and their pilot, just minutes after taking off from New York City. The aircraft plunged into the Hudson River after the pilot radioed in to say he needed fuel. Moments later, witnesses watched in horror as the helicopter spiraled out of control, its main rotor blade seen falling from the sky.

It was the latest in a disturbing pattern.

We lost Kobe Bryant and his daughter in a helicopter crash.

In 2019, a pilot died when his helicopter struck a Manhattan skyscraper.

Now, six more lives are gone. This time tourists, a family simply hoping to take in the view. And once again, we're left asking: Why is it still so easy to board a helicopter, with so few restrictions and such little oversight?

How many more lives have to be lost before we act?

Helicopter flights, especially for non-essential purposes like tourism, must be treated with the seriousness and caution they demand. We’re calling on the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), and lawmakers at every level to immediately review and strengthen:

  • Safety inspections and mechanical checks for all tour and commercial helicopters
  • Pilot training and pre-flight fuel protocols
  • Flight restrictions during poor weather or crowded airspace
  • Transparency for passengers about risks and aircraft history

These aircraft often fly over some of the most densely populated areas in the country. The consequences of failure aren’t just tragic, they’re preventable.

Sign this petition to demand immediate federal and state-level action. Let’s not wait for another headline. Let’s act now. Every flight should be safe, and every family should come home.
