Strengthen Pedestrian Safety Laws

Strengthen Pedestrian Safety Laws
The Issue
On a day like any other, Donna, a beloved mother, Grandmother and mother in Law ventured out for her usual walk, only to become the victim of a tragic incident. She was struck by an SUV from behind that was parked on the side of a building backing up more than 15 feet while crossing through the parking lot because the sidewalk ended – an area that should have been a safe haven for pedestrians. The driver responsible for this catastrophic event was never charged, leaving Donna's family without justice and grappling with the heartbreaking loss of a loved one. Donna’s story is not an isolated one. Across the United States, pedestrian fatalities have been on the rise. According to the Governors Highway Safety Association, nearly 6,590 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes in 2019 alone. This represents a 5% increase from the previous year, showcasing a trend that calls for immediate attention.
Despite these alarming statistics, there seems to be a glaring gap in vehicle and pedestrian laws that leaves pedestrians vulnerable and drivers unaccountable. This gap means families like mine, and by extension, communities, are left to deal with the aftermath of preventable tragedies with little to no recompense or closure.
It's time to change this. We propose a comprehensive review and strengthening of pedestrian safety laws. This includes stricter penalties for drivers involved in pedestrian accidents, better infrastructure such as pedestrian bridges and well-marked crosswalks, and enhanced public awareness campaigns to ensure drivers prioritize pedestrian safety at all times.
Moreover, implementing technology that alerts drivers when pedestrians are nearby can drastically reduce these incidents. Cost-effective solutions such as motion sensor technology and better street lighting are practical steps that can be implemented at a municipal level.
Our goal is clear – not another life should be lost, and not another family should have to suffer like Donna’s did. We urge lawmakers to take decisive action to protect our communities and prevent further tragedies from happening.
