Strengthen New Jersey animal cruelty laws

The Issue

In New Jersey, animals often suffer in silence, victims of cruelty and neglect with perpetrators facing minimal consequences. This issue is deeply personal to me because I believe in giving a voice to the voiceless. Animals, our companions and fellow inhabitants of this earth, deserve protection from harm and justice when wronged. Unfortunately, current New Jersey laws do not adequately deter or penalize those who commit acts of cruelty toward animals.

Across the United States, many states have adopted stricter laws, recognizing animal cruelty as a felony with mandatory jail time. These laws serve as a deterrent and as a means to ensure justice is served. According to the Animal Legal Defense Fund, only a few states maintain a failing record in animal protection laws, and it's disheartening to see New Jersey not at the forefront of change.

Studies have shown that individuals who commit animal cruelty are more likely to engage in violent crimes against humans. Strengthening our laws isn't just about protecting animals, but also about fostering safer communities overall. By making animal cruelty a felony punishable with real jail time in New Jersey, we can deter potential offenders.

We propose that the New Jersey legislature amends its current legal framework to classify egregious acts of cruelty as felonies. We need structured policies including increased penalties, mandatory psychological evaluations for offenders, and community service requirements in animal welfare as part of sentencing.
