The Issue
Have you been a victim?. The emotional toll of anonymous attacks, fake accounts, and digital intimidation has been overwhelming. My experience has opened my eyes to a MUCH larger issue that affects countless individuals across Louisiana and the entire country. The anonymity of the internet allows those with malicious intent to harass, impersonate, threaten, and target individuals with little to no accountability.
Online harassment is not just a digital nuisance; it is a serious issue impacting mental health, personal safety, and well-being. Statistics show that 41% of Americans have experienced online harassment and 18% have been victims of severe harassment like physical threats, stalking, and sexual harassment. The effects are profound, with victims often facing anxiety, depression, and even PTSD as a result of sustained online attack.
Louisiana's current laws do not adequately protect its citizens from these threats. Despite the significant psychological and emotional damage inflicted by online harassment, existing legislation fails to effectively deter or punish offenders. Many perpetrators hide behind fake accounts, leaving victims feeling helpless and without recourse.
Strengthening these laws would serve as a deterrent and provide law enforcement with the proper tools to protect victims and hold offenders responsible. We propose new, comprehensive legislation that specifically addresses online harassment, digital impersonation, and the creation and use of fake accounts for malicious purposes. This legislation should include clearly defined penalties for offenders, mechanisms to trace anonymous accounts, and support systems for victims
Support from the community and our lawmakers is crucial to make these changes a reality. By signing this petition, you are not just standing against online harassment, but you are standing for the safety, dignity, and well-being of all Louisianians.
Let's come together to create a safer, more respectful digital environment for everyone. Please sign this petition to demand change and protect our community from the destructive impact of online harassment.
