Interns across the state are vulnerable to various forms of workplace issues, including bullying, harassment, and abuse. Despite their invaluable contribution to business operations, their standing often forsakes them from the requisite legal safeguards. We must ensure that the legal protection available to all employees extends unreservedly to interns as well.

A study conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) indicated that temporary workers like interns are more susceptible to workplace stress and harassment. This includes exposure to bullying, abuse, and safety hazards, often leading to detrimental physical and mental health consequences (NIOSH, 2017).

Moreover, the International Labour Organization reported in 2018 that young workers are 40% more likely to experience workplace abuse compared to older workers, showing that this is a significant and pressing issue that we cannot ignore.

We are calling upon our lawmakers to review and upgrade laws concerning internships. They should take crucial steps to ensure the welfare, safety, and rights of interns are well protected and implemented, making the workplace safer and more equitable for everyone. Strengthening legal protection for interns will be a crucial step in fostering healthier work environments and protecting vulnerable young workers.
