The Issue
On what should have been an ordinary morning, my family and I experienced a horrific event that no one should ever endure. As my toddler was put into the car to go to childcare, three XL Bulldogs attacked my beloved French bulldog, Monty. It happened so quickly that the child’s father had barely had time to react. Billy bravely intervened in an attempt to save Monty, suffering bites in the process, but despite his desperate efforts, Monty was mauled to death.
This was not an isolated incident. Across the UK, XL Bully-type dogs have been involved in numerous attacks, leading to severe injuries and fatalities in people, children, and other animals. The current legal framework regarding the control and monitoring of these powerful breeds is insufficient and places members of the public at risk.
We are calling for immediate action to tighten the legal controls on XL Bully-type dogs.
These measures should include stronger penalties for owners who knowingly ignore mandatory muzzling requirements in public places. Furthermore, the registration of a maximum of one XL Bully-type dog per individual should be enforced to prevent owners from managing more dogs than they can control.
To support these initiatives, authorities must commit to tougher enforcement of these rules. This includes regular checks on compliance and significant penalties for violations, to deter negligence and irresponsibility among dog owners. Our goal is not to demonize these animals but to ensure that ownership comes with the responsibility necessary to prevent tragedy.
According to the Office for National Statistics, dog-related incidents have risen by 30% in urban areas over the past five years, with XL Bully breeds disproportionately represented in these statistics. We urge local councils and the government to revisit current regulations and introduce legislation that tackles this growing problem effectively.
