The Issue

A 73-year-old man in Thomasville, North Carolina, was killed by a large pack of dogs near his home on Jeanette Lane. According to the Davidson County Sheriff's Office, the dogs belonged to someone. This was not a random act of nature. It was a preventable tragedy.

Neighbors were left shocked, grieving, and most of all, uninformed. Many learned about the fatal attack through word of mouth instead of official warnings. Parents did not know to keep their children inside. Families with elderly or disabled loved ones were given no opportunity to take precautions. That is unacceptable.

Dog owners have a legal and moral responsibility to control their animals. If that responsibility is ignored and someone dies as a result, there must be consequences. Right now, Davidson County does not have clear or consistently enforced laws that would prevent this kind of negligence from repeating itself.

We are calling on the Davidson County Board of Commissioners to:

  • Pass stronger dog confinement laws that require secure containment on private property
  • Mandate criminal liability for owners whose animals cause serious injury or death
  • Increase funding for animal control enforcement and community safety outreach
  • Create a public emergency notification system for dangerous animal incidents

One life has already been lost. If no action is taken, more could follow. This is not about punishment. It is about prevention, safety, and accountability.

Sign this petition to demand that Davidson County protect its people with stronger, clearer laws. No one else should die because a neighbor’s dogs were left to roam.
