Strengthen Animal Welfare Protection in Arizona

Strengthen Animal Welfare Protection in Arizona
The Issue
The safety of animals is an issue that deserves far more attention and action, especially in areas like Arizona, where extreme heat and growing tourism can place animals at serious risk if they are not attended to properly. I don’t just want to raise awareness, but also to encourage accountability and changes that improve the lives of innocent animals who cannot protect themselves.
One of the biggest concerns is animals kept in captivity for the mere purpose of profiting from the entertainment of onlookers. If a zoo or wildlife park is choosing to keep animals in their care, it is their responsibility to provide a safe, healthy, and humane environment for them. This includes providing the animal with appropriate habitats, diets, opportunities for interactions with other animals. If they are not capable of meeting these requirements, they should not be allowed to have animals under their care. Facilities such as Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium & Safari Park have sparked public concerns and criticism. People question their ability to ensure animals’ well-being because of reports of animal welfare concerns, inspection violations, and unusual animal deaths. In enclosures where animals are entirely dependent on humans for food, shelter, and medical care, there should be absolutely no room for neglect or poor conditions. To help resolve and prevent future issues, Arizona needs stronger and stricter regulations for zoos and exotic animal facilities. This includes, harsher penalties for violations of animal welfare standards, mandatory surprise inspections carried out by professionals, and public access to these inspection reports so people are aware and informed. For facilities who fail these inspections, they must be held accountable because animal victims of mistreatment cannot speak out for themselves. Consequences could include having the facility shut down and the removal of all animals to a safer environment.
In addition to improving oversight of zoos, I also want to encourage pet owners to be more responsible. Yearly, thousands of animals suffer from abandonment, abuse, or neglect because owners are either unprepared or unwilling to care for them. In the intense heat of Arizona, even small acts of negligence, such as leaving an animal without shade or water for a short moment can quickly accelerate and become life-threatening. The state should require stronger education on animal care before one can own a pet, especially exotic ones that require special treatment. By educating communities about proper treatment towards animals, we can help promote the ethical values of compassion and responsibility. Teaching responsibility would also help prevent unnecessary suffering and reduce the number of abandoned animals. In short, it’s important to be mindful that animals are living beings capable of feeling pain, stress, and suffering. They deserve to be treated with dignity and not seen as objects for entertainment.
I want Arizona to be a state where animals’ well-being is ensured by enforcing stronger laws and increased public accountability. Whether an animal is living in a zoo, shelter, or home, they deserve protection from neglect and abuse. Protecting animals is not just about saving individual lives, it is about building a more empathetic and responsible society. When communities stand up against cruelty and demand higher standards, real change becomes possible. Through firm oversight, improved education, and public advocacy, we can help ensure that animals are treated with the love and respect they deserve.
