The Issue

Animals, especially stray dogs and cats, suffer every day. A lot of them roam the streets with wounds, broken bones, and empty stomachs, searching for foods in trash bins. Others are abused, neglected, or forced to live in poor conditions. It is heartbreaking to see, yet many cases of animal cruelty go unpunished. The current laws are not enough to protect them.

We need stronger animal welfare laws to ensure animals are treated with care and respect. They deserve proper food, shelter, and medical attention. Stricter laws will help prevent abuse, hold offenders accountable, and improve animal welfare in farms, homes, and especially laboratories. It is our responsibility to protect animals. By supporting stronger animal welfare laws, we can give them a better life and make the world a more compassionate place. Let’s take action now, because animals cannot speak for themselves, but we can speak for them. Support animal welfare organizations, report cases of cruelty, and push for stricter policies.

Animal cruelty remains a persistent issue in the Philippines, as seen in multiple incidents reported by reputable sources. GMA Integrated News exposed content creator Ramil Ballaran from Albay, who threw a cat into a river for online clout, sparking outrage among netizens. In March, GMA also reported the killing of Killua, a three-year-old golden retriever, by barangay tanod Anthony Solares in Camarines Sur, despite CCTV footage contradicting his claim of self-defense. Meanwhile, a viral Facebook post by Lara L. Antonio revealed breed discrimination at Balay Dako, a supposed pet-friendly restaurant in Tagaytay, where her aspin Yoda was denied entry while a Labrador was allowed. Additionally, GMA Regional TV shared a disturbing video from La Trinidad, Benguet, showing individuals slaughtering dogs for consumption. These cases highlight the ongoing cruelty animals endure despite existing laws meant to protect them.

If we wouldn't tolerate cruelty to humans, why should we allow it for animals?
