Strathcona/Chinatown Protect Vital Green Space over a Fire Truck Annex

The Issue

Our local community in Strathcona/Chinatown, Vancouver, BC faces an imminent loss of an irreplaceable asset: our cherished green space. We are confronting a formidable threat in the proposed rezoning of this vital area for a fire truck annex. This site serves as a crucial link between Chinatown and Strathcona, offering residents respite from urban sprawl. It is not merely a patch of vegetation but a thriving hub for picnics, children's play, cyclists seeking refuge, and community gatherings.

Adjacent to the largest social housing site in British Columbia, our community consists largely of low-income families. We are deeply concerned about the proposed rezoning's impact on social cohesion, reducing communal spaces and introducing industrial activity into our peaceful residential area.

This green space plays an essential role in our neighborhood's ecosystem, absorbing carbon dioxide, providing habitat for urban wildlife, and mitigating the heat island effect common in cities. Its loss would significantly diminish local biodiversity and air quality, exacerbating health issues among vulnerable populations.

With a new hospital nearby and numerous vacant sites along Hastings St., we question the necessity of disrupting our serene residential area with another industrial facility. We urge authorities to prioritize the well-being of residents and environmental conservation in urban planning.

We respectfully request a reconsideration of the rezoning proposal and exploration of alternative sites for the temporary annex that preserve our community's natural assets and the health, environmental, and social benefits they provide. This is not about opposing essential services but about responsible urban development that respects community connectivity and character.

Please join us in defending our green spaces and the essence of our community. Stand with us by signing our petition. Together, we can protect what makes Strathcona/Chinatown a vibrant and livable neighbourhood.
