#stopOrban and the violences on refugees in Hungary

“Your miracles will connect again
Whatever fashion had strictly devided
All men will become brothers
Wherever your tender wing remains.”
European Anthem

What is happening in Hungary in these days is totally unacceptable for EU core values.
Every citizen, man or woman, young or old, looking to those facts should raise his head and say “That's enough!”.
Watching those people hit with batons, pepper spray, denuded by barbwire, we should all wince and ask ourselves: is it what we originally wanted?

As Giovani Democratici, we feel we can not stand idly in front of these atrocities that are, without any doubt, crimes against humanity.
We thought that the pictures of Aylan's body would have been sufficient to arouse the indignation and to understand that a limit has been exceeded; however, the actions performed by Viktor Orbán and the government he presides tell us that they weren't.
Viktor Orbán, in fact, is violating almost entirely the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as well as the second article of the European Constitution (article transfused in the TEU).
Moreover, there is the new legislative package adopted by the Hungarian National Assembly regarding asylum-seekers. This includes, for example: the direct and unlimited domestic use of the military forces with same rules of engagement as those of the police, including the use of firearms; intrusion to any private home or property without search warrant, upon presumption of any migrants inside; the illegal border crossing or damaging the fence at the border is now a criminal offence punishable by up to three years in prison.

We believe the time has come to win all the resistance of the Member States, of any political color they are: in the field of migration and asylum policies, they must demonstrate real solidarity by establishing appropriate and compulsory mechanisms for sharing responsibilities in the management of the flows of asylum seekers, overcoming once and for all the Dublin Regulation III, now woefully inadequate. Similarly, UE Member States must allocate adequate resources to intensify the fight against trafficking in human beings, to activate programs of assistance to the countries from which the migrants leave and policies of effective reception and integration, to save lives and prevent more tragedies.
This is what should be done
On the contrary, what transpires today is the image of a European Union fast and relentless in taking measures against countries when it concerns to economic issues, but very slow and weak when it comes to human rights.
The deafening silence of the past years and the demeaning debate of past months, all focused on the numbers, lead us to say that this European Union is, in fact, fallen under the control of the most sinister and mean features the human being is capable of: greed, selfishness, shortsightedness and fear.
This is no longer acceptable.

For all these reasons,
we ask:

  1. the European Union to take measures against Hungarian government, with penalties commensurate with the severity of its conductand and cruelty that asylum-seekers face at the hands of the Hungarian authorities;

  2. the European Popular Party to dismiss Fidesz - Magyar Polgári Szövetség as a party member. The core values expressed by the second article of our constitution cannot be questioned basing on different political views;

  3. the European Popular Party, the Party of European Socialists and the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe to require a change of direction by the European institutions.

As a result of the government's actions at the Hungarian-Serbian border, there are hundreds of people suffering outside the fences, including pregnant women and many, many children with no water, food, shelter or hope. The European Union and the European Parliament cannot tolerate this humanitarian catastrophe and the politics of the Hungarian government.
Whatever happens, whatever may be the discomfort caused by these migration flows, we must never ever forget of what led us to break down the borders that once divided us: the desire for peace and the belief that all men are equal. Always.
We also call on all citizens of the world, women and men from Europe and beyond, right and left, young and old, to subscribe to our request and to translate and forward it, by any mean, so that it goes to every national institution.

The day we'll be able to feel every injustice committed by anyone anywhere in the world as our own, we can finally tell us human.
