The Issue

Our home, Cedar City, Utah, has always been a picturesque small town defined by its peaceful residential makeup. Alarmingly, a proposed zoning change threatens to disrupt this tranquility by permitting the construction of up to three-story high apartment buildings in a very rural area. This isn't just a hypothetical threat; if approved, the current proposal will allow the construction of a 120-unit apartment complex and 8,000 square foot lots. This proposal impacts the land on the West side of Westview Road, just below Westview Estates, Springhill Creek, and 4B subdivisions.  This is just West of all of the South Mountain communities.

Expanding in this way could have dire consequences on our town’s character, altering not just its physical landscape but the very spirit that makes Cedar City an exceptional place to live. These changes could draw in a dramatically higher population, potentially overwhelming our existing infrastructure and resources in this area. Further, the potential increase in traffic, noise, and pollution could negatively impact our quality of life.

The proposed plan would add 865 units in just under 160 acres.  That is 865 units that will be driving through South Mountain subdivisions to get to Walmart, Home Depot, schools, etc.  That will more than double, if not triple, the amount of traffic on those streets.

For the sake of maintaining the quality of life that the western part of Cedar City offers, I implore you all to stand up against this proposed change to our community. Only together can we ensure that our beloved city continues to be the serene residential haven it has always been. Please sign this petition to stop the zoning changes in Cedar City.

Details:

Zone Change from: Master Planned Development to R-2-2 Residential Zone (8k-9k lot sizes) and R-3-M Residential Zone (up to 120-unit 3-story apartment complex).
