The Issue

My name is Faye GIlbert and I am writing today with a heavy heart and a firm resolve as a mother advocating not just for my son, Rhys, but for every family with children who have Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) in Wokingham. The issue of safe and reliable transportation for SEND young people to and from their educational institutions is becoming increasingly alarming as vital services are being neglected by our local council.

Rhys, like many other children in our community, relies on this crucial service to access the education he deserves. Unfortunately, recent changes in the transport policies by Wokingham Borough Council have left Rhys and his peers without the safe transport options they are entitled to. This situation is not just about convenience; it directly affects their right to education, safety, and equal opportunities.

Statistics show that consistent and reliable transportation is one of the foundational pillars supporting SEND students' access to education. Ensuring that students have a safe and accessible way to get to school is critical—both for their educational development and well-being. Yet, according to recent reports and personal accounts from families like mine, these essential services are being cut back or inadequately provided due to budget constraints or logistical mishandling.

The impact of this lack of service means increased anxiety for children like Rhys, who thrive on routine and dependability, and added stress for families struggling to fulfil these transportation needs without council support. This situation is untenable and, frankly, unacceptable. Every child has the right to a safe journey to education, and community members, parents, and educators must ensure that local authorities uphold these rights.

We demand an immediate review and reinstatement of comprehensive transport services for all SEND students. This should include collaborating with local transport providers to ensure safe, reliable, and accessible options are in place by the start of the next academic term.

We need your support to hold Wokingham Borough Council accountable and to push for immediate action to reinstate necessary transport services for SEND young people. Together, we can ensure our children receive the education and care they are entitled to. Please sign this petition and help make a difference for Rhys and countless other families facing similar struggles.
