Stop Winthrop University from charging students $467 for every credit hour above 15

The Issue

On Monday, March 24 2025, the student body recieved an email notifying us that students taking more than 15 Credit hours will be charged an additional $467 per credit hour. This means that students taking 18 credit hours will be paying an added $1,401 per semester. This poses a financial risk to students trying to get the most out of their college education, which previously was not an issue. Previously, 18 credit hours was considered the "maximum" number of credits we could take, and now students will be expected to pay an unreasonable fee for this previously established norm.

This change does not take into account students who need a certain amount of credits to maintain financial scholarships, and hold no expceptions for classes that directly benefit the university such as: leadership classes required to be an RA, performance practicums in the CVPA, and Field placements and internships for Education students. This change also makes it difficult for students to pursue a double major, and even have a minor.

While this change may not cause harm to those who are able to pay this fee, it could be detrimental to those who do not have that luxury. With the current financial climate in the U.S., this news comes off as tone deaf and irresponsible. We ask that the University listen to the several department heads who have voiced their concerns, and re-evaluate the change.
