Stop Wind Turbines Project From Destroying Our Community

Stop Wind Turbines Project From Destroying Our Community

The Issue

Capon Springs and Farms in Capon Springs, West Virginia, is partnering with Competitive Power Ventures (CPV), a company foreign-owned by OPC Energy, to install 18 to 25 industrial wind turbines—each up to 656 feet tall—on the West Virginia side of North Mountain.

This petition stands in firm opposition to the project. North Mountain is not the place for massive industrial development that threatens our viewsheds, wildlife, and the natural beauty that makes West Virginia wild and wonderful.

We ask Capon Springs and Farms and CPV to cease this undertaking. We also urge the Public Service Commission to deny any permit application that may be filed. Some of our concerns include:

• Risk to Springs – Blasting and deep foundations may disrupt underground water flow, threatening the springs themselves.
• Property Value Loss – Industrial development could lower nearby property values by harming rural and scenic appeal.
• Wildlife Disruption – Turbines pose risks to birds, bats, and fragile ecosystems due to noise, strikes, and habitat loss.
• Health Concerns – Low-frequency noise and vibration have been linked to sleep issues, headaches, and anxiety.
• Shadow Flicker – Rotating blades can cause migraines, nausea, and stress, especially in sensitive individuals.
• Light Pollution – Red blinking lights will change the night sky and harm the area’s natural darkness.
• Visual Impact – 600+ foot turbines will dominate the ridgeline and ruin iconic mountain views.
• Traffic & Damage – Heavy equipment will strain rural roads and damage the landscape during construction.
• Fire Hazard – Mechanical or electrical failures could spark wildfires in remote, dry areas.
• Tourism Loss – Visitors come for peace, beauty, and nature — not to vacation beside giant turbines.
• Community Division – The project moved forward without local input, leaving residents out of the process.
• Short-Term Gains, Long-Term Harm – Temporary jobs don’t outweigh the permanent damage to land, views, and community.

Let’s protect the irreplaceable beauty of our West Virginia mountains. These turbines would inflict lasting harm on our cherished landscapes.
