As students of William Peace University, we face a new challenge that threatens our ability to stay safe and secure during Thanksgiving and Winter school breaks. Many of us cannot afford to go home over the holidays, or we do not have a proper home to go to. In such cases, staying on campus has been our only refuge. However, the university's recent decision to charge us for staying on campus during these periods is deeply concerning.

This sudden change in policy is not only unjust but also puts undue financial pressure on students who are already struggling with tuition fees and living expenses. It's worth noting that according to Education Data Initiative, the average cost of room and board for private, nonprofit colleges (such as William Peace) is $13,028 (source: Education Data Initiative). Adding an extra charge for staying on campus during breaks can significantly increase this burden.

With the charge of $20 a night per night a student stays on campus, that sums up to $200 for Thanksgiving break and $720 for the entirety of Winter Break. To some, this may not seem like a lot - however, for many students (and families), this isn't an obtainable amount. Especially when considering that students are already on campus at all other times, along with the fact that they will also need to provide food for themselves during this time.

Moreover, it's important to remember that this was never a practice before; there is no reason why it should be implemented now when it directly impacts students' welfare. We believe education institutions should be supportive environments where every student has equal opportunities regardless of their financial situation.

We urge William Peace University administration - reconsider your decision and don't charge students for staying on-campus over breaks. This petition isn't just about money; it's about fairness and support for those who need it most among us.
