STOP Wellington City Council's Paid Motorcycle Parking.

STOP Wellington City Council's Paid Motorcycle Parking.
The issue
The WCC have recently made another controversial decision, this time to implement paid parking for motorcycles and scooters, despite facing substantial opposition. A staggering 80% of all submissions were opposed to this idea, showing just how little respect some councilors have for the opinions of the public. This has been rushed through, as it seems new mayoral candidates also oppose the idea.
The only city in NZ to do so, WCC will introduce the following fees: $1 an hour, capped at $6 a day or $30 a week. These fees will be introduced on the 1st of July.
If we put environmental considerations aside for a moment, motorcycles and scooters offer an affordable mode of transport for many residents, thanks to their cost-effectiveness. The introduction of the $6 daily fee is going to impact low-income individuals, students, and those with limited public transport options. Motorcycles and scooters are vital to maintain an efficient flow of traffic in Wellington. Studies and observations show that these vehicles contribute significantly to reducing congestion and lowering traffic density, as well as taking up considerably less space.
With the environment in mind, unlike cars, especially those with a single occupant (of which Wellington has a lot) motorcycles and scooters produce less emissions, which are therefore more environmentally friendly in an urban environment. In a time where cities worldwide are striving to become more sustainable, the WCC should be a leader in promoting more eco-friendly transport options.
We urge the Wellington City Council to reconsider this decision. Sign this petition to stand against paid motorcycle parking and being ignored by those responsible for spending your hard-earned rates dollar.
