The issue

I am deeply concerned about the recent introduction of AI Surveillance Vans by the Western Australia Police (WAPOL). As someone who strongly values privacy and freedom, I see this initiative as a direct violation of our fundamental rights to privacy and human rights. It's distressing to witness how these surveillance vans have been deployed, actively impeding on these essential freedoms.

The use of AI Surveillance Vans raises serious concerns about the extent of monitoring these vehicles conduct and the data they collect. We've not been given clear information on how the data will be used, who will have access to it, or the measures in place to ensure it won't be misused. Furthermore, there are significant risks of biases in AI systems, leading to potential wrongful profiling and discrimination. Numerous studies have shown that AI technologies in surveillance can have a higher error rate with individuals from diverse backgrounds, which can exacerbate existing inequalities and lead to unjust consequences.

Besides, the implications of such surveillance are far-reaching. It creates a chilling effect on our community, where people are afraid to exercise their freedom of expression or gather in public spaces for fear of being monitored. This is not the kind of society we want to foster. The right to privacy is enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and it's crucial that we uphold these standards in our community.

There are also concerns about the effectiveness of AI surveillance in improving public safety. Studies have repeatedly shown that traditional forms of community-based policing build trust and prove more effective in maintaining public safety than intrusive surveillance methods.

I urge the Western Australia Police to halt the deployment of these AI Surveillance Vans immediately and seek public consultation to explore more effective and respectful initiatives. Instead of implementing invasive technologies, let's focus on community-driven solutions that ensure both safety and the preservation of our rights.

Please sign this petition to stop the AI Surveillance Vans in Western Australia and protect our privacy and freedoms.
