If you live in Torrance, please sign this petition to let our city representatives know that in tough economic times like these, the last thing we need is a job-destroying employer taking over the Torrance economy. Walmart is planning to lease the 75,000 sq. foot building that formerly housed Mervyns near Hawthorne and Sepulveda.

When Walmart enters a community, it kills three retail jobs for every two poverty-wage job it “creates.” After a Walmart opened in Chicago 25% of existing retail businesses surveyed within four miles eventualy closed. We must prevent this from happening in Torrance.

We urge our Torrance City Council, our Mayor, and our City Manager’s office to bring good jobs to our communities, not companies like Walmart that lower the average wage in an area and destroy existing, local jobs.

Walmart stores have a history of increasing traffic on streets, blight surrounding their stores, and crime in their parking lots.  Walmart stores are not good for our community.
