Stop Viewpoint Discrimination Against Conservative Journalists

Stop Viewpoint Discrimination Against Conservative Journalists
The Issue
The First Amendment does not belong to one political party.
Three conservative media figures were denied press credentials by the Washington House of Representatives, while the Washington Senate granted them access. A federal judge declined to issue a temporary restraining order, but the case is still ongoing.
The issue here is larger than one court ruling.
When government officials decide who qualifies as a “bona fide journalist” based on whether someone participates in the political process, it raises serious constitutional concerns. In today’s media landscape, journalists include radio hosts, podcasters, digital reporters, and independent media outlets. Many traditional reporters also hold opinions, moderate events, or engage publicly on policy issues.
If press access can be denied because someone is seen as an advocate, where does that line stop?
The government must not become the arbiter of acceptable viewpoints. Press credentialing policies must be clear, objective, and applied equally regardless of political ideology.
Legislative spaces exist to conduct the public’s business. The public deserves broad access through diverse media voices, including conservative outlets that represent a significant portion of Washington residents.
We call on the Washington House to revise its press credentialing standards to ensure viewpoint neutrality, transparent criteria, and due process protections.
Free speech and free press protections are strongest when they protect speech we disagree with.
Sign this petition to demand equal press access and defend the First Amendment rights of conservative journalists.
