Stop Vesper Energy's Battery Facility in Columbia Twp
The Issue
Living in Grand Junction, MI, we are constantly reminded of the beauty and fragility of our local ecosystem, particularly our cherished wetlands near the Jeptha Lake area. This invaluable natural resource not only supports a diverse range of wildlife but also sustains local agriculture, our families' health, and the well-being of our pets and livestock. It is distressing to imagine the threat posed by Vesper Energy's proposed Bess Lithium-ion battery facility in Columbia Township, which borders the communities of Bangor and Bloomingdale.
The potential risks associated with this facility are profound. Lithium-ion batteries are notorious for their fire risks; when ignited, these fires produce hydrogen fluoride fumes, a highly toxic compound. What is more alarming is that such fires cannot simply be extinguished with water, and if they were to occur, the resulting toxic fumes and potential hydrochloric acid formation could force widespread evacuations, putting our entire community at risk.
In addition to the immediate danger to human health, the proposed location poses catastrophic environmental consequences. Our wetlands are integral to the area's natural infrastructure, filtering water and providing habitat for countless species. Contaminants from a battery fire could easily leach into our rivers, including the Black River, and eventually reach Lake Michigan, threatening aquatic life and polluting vital water sources.
The urgency to act against this proposed plan stems from the collective responsibility to preserve our environment for future generations. We cannot stand idly by as the risk of devastating ecological and community health disasters looms over us.
We urge your support in preventing this facility from being constructed in such a vulnerable region. Together, our voices can compel Vesper Energy to reevaluate the facility's location and prioritize the safety and sustainability of our beloved Grand Junction community. Please sign the petition to help protect our home, our health, and our environment from irreversible harm and to stand united in defense of our wetlands and community well-being.
