Stop Vaughan Council's Culling of Coyotes

The Issue

Vaughan City Council is planning to cull coyotes in response to recent encounters in our urban areas. However, this decision is both inhumane and ineffective, and it requires our immediate intervention.

Coyotes have been an integral part of our local ecosystem for centuries. They naturally control rodent populations and their presence is critical for maintaining biodiversity. Removing them disrupts these natural processes, leading to overpopulation of other species, which can create further ecological imbalances. Scientific studies, such as those published by the National Wildlife Research Center demonstrate that culling does not decrease coyote populations in the long term. Instead, it often results in the opposite due to compensatory reproduction and territorial shifts.

Moreover, culling is a cruel action. Non-lethal solutions, such as public education on human-coyote coexistence, hazing (scare tactics), and securing food sources, have proven to be effective strategies in other cities, including the City of Niagara Falls Canada, as reported by reputable wildlife management organizations.

The city council should instead focus on comprehensive management plans that include educating residents on cohabitating with coyotes, using deterrents, and implementing proper waste management practices. These solutions ensure both human and wildlife safety without unnecessary harm.

We urge our city council to reconsider their approach and look towards sustainable and humane solutions that balance community safety and ecological preservation.

Sign this petition to demand a humane and ecologically responsible approach to managing the coyote population in our community.
