Every year, hundreds of people suffering from respiratory problem, caused by the very fine particles which is created and distributed by smoke coming out from chimneys of wood burners (wood stoves). "Wood smoke is made up of over 100 different chemicals and compounds including particulates, carbon monoxide, methane, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), dioxins, lead, cadmium and arsenic. It contains harmful toxins and other substances known to cause cancer." 

The central, and local authorities must realize this technology is way below the 21st century standard, and continue to issue consent to install wood burning equipment, and allow people to legally use it will keep us exposed to the above mentioned harmful toxins, and keeps our community exposed to risk, which is easily avoidable.

Making the right decision now would make a huge difference even in the short term, our air pollution could be reduced by a substantial amount by using alternative heat sources. Specifically in highly populated areas, like larger cities like Christchurch. Protecting our own health and our environment at the same time and let everybody enjoy the benefit of fresh air even during the winter month is our common interest.
