Stop using Turnitin AI score alone to punish students
The Issue
I am a student of TEAM University in Tashkent, and I am deeply concerned about the current use of Turnitin's AI detection scores to give marks for assignments. I believe I was unfairly accused of using more than 20% AI content in my assignments for Creative Design Thinking and my groupmates on Theory of Practice of Entrepreneurship, despite our genuine efforts to produce original work. This has caused me and my groupmates a lot of stress and has impacted my well being altogether.
The use of Turnitin's AI detection score as the sole determiner of plagiarism or lack of originality is problematic. According to the University of San Diego Legal Research Center, even though Turnitin claims to have a low false positive rate, there remains a potential for human-written content to be inaccurately flagged as AI-generated. The transparency of their algorithm remains in question, as Turnitin has yet to publicly disclose the specifics.
The reliance on unverified AI scores risks punishing students undeserved , and this practice needs to be addressed ASAP. As students, our work should be evaluated fairly, with a comprehensive review process that includes human oversight and considers the context and intent of each submission, and panel discussion should be seen not as one of the step of procedure to just explain the power of Turnitin but to listen to what students say, and make actual difference in decision making when scoring for assignments.
To the administration of TEAM University, I urge you to reconsider the current grading policy that heavily relies on these AI scores. Instead, establish a more nuanced approach that involves cross-checking suspected cases with alternative methods, possibly involving faculty experts who can provide a more holistic assessment, not just looking at Turnitin results and completely ignore the words of students.
Tackle the power of AI but not at the expense of student fairness and integrity. Let us build a system that supports accurate assessment and encourages learning rather than merely penalizing based on potentially flawed detection techniques.
I call on my fellow students, educators, and stakeholders in the educational sector to support this petition. Together, let's advocate for a fair and equitable approach to assignment grading and ensure that no student's efforts are wrongly discredited. Please sign this petition to urge TEAM University to review and revise its current policy involving Turnitin's AI detection scores.
