Lake Massapoag is the pride and joy of Sharon. It provides us with scenic views, recreation, and increases property value. However, our lake is currently in crisis. Phosphorus fertilizer runoff from SHS sports fields and lawns has caused harmful algae blooms in Lake Massapoag. These algae blooms make the water unsafe to swim in, and deplete dissolved oxygen levels, creating dead zones where aquatic life cannot survive. In 2022 and 2023, the water around SHS was the most consistent source of phosphorus flowing into the lake. Please sign this petition to urge administration to take immediate action by switching to phosphorus-free fertilizer. Phosphorus is extremely difficult and costly to extract from the lake, but it is easy to stop adding it.
