Stop Unsafe Traffic Chaos in Mornington Peninsula

Stop Unsafe Traffic Chaos in Mornington Peninsula
The issue
To Melissa Horne, Department of Transport and Planning Victoria, Major Road Projects Victoria.
We, the undersigned members of the community, wish to formally raise our concerns regarding the recent closure of Peninsula Link and the apparent failure to adhere to established traffic management policies governing works and activities within road reserves.
The fundamental rationale for government intervention in traffic management is clear: to prevent road safety hazards, minimise traffic congestion, and ensure the road network continues to serve its primary purpose—the safe and efficient movement of people and goods. Additionally, such policies exist to ensure that any works undertaken within road reserves are conducted responsibly, without compromising the integrity of infrastructure or disproportionately impacting road users.
In the case of the Peninsula Link closure, there is significant concern that these guiding principles have not been upheld. The closure has resulted in increased congestion on surrounding arterial and local roads, creating unsafe driving conditions, extended travel times, and heightened frustration for commuters. Many alternative routes are not designed to accommodate the volume of redirected traffic, thereby increasing the risk of accidents and placing undue strain on local communities.
Furthermore, there appears to be a lack of adequate planning, communication, and mitigation strategies to minimise the disruption caused by the closure. Effective traffic management policies require clear advance notice, well-planned detours, and measures to ensure safety and efficiency are maintained. The absence or inadequacy of these measures raises serious questions about compliance with established standards and obligations.
We respectfully request that the relevant authorities:
1. Provide a detailed explanation of the planning and decision-making process behind the Peninsula Link closure.
2. Clarify how this closure complies with existing traffic management policies and guidelines.
3. Conduct an immediate review of the traffic management plan associated with this closure.
4. Implement improved traffic mitigation strategies to reduce congestion and enhance safety on alternative routes.
The community relies on government agencies to uphold policies designed to protect public safety and ensure the efficient functioning of critical infrastructure. When these standards are not met, it is the responsibility of those authorities to address concerns promptly and take corrective action.
We urge you to treat this matter with the seriousness it deserves and to take immediate steps to restore public confidence in the management of our road network.
Sincerely,
Amanda Brullo / Community Representative
