The Issue

For the tenants of 6430 S Stony Island Ave, in Woodlawn, Chicago, IL, relocation is not a choice—it’s an injustice. Among them are many individuals with disabilities, including myself. Initially, we were told that, due to our disabilities, we could remain in our current building. Unfortunately, the building has now been deemed unsafe, and the proposed solution for our relocation is deeply concerning.

The suggested transfer to Lake Meadows Apartments promises nothing but adversity for us. These apartments are far from suitable for anyone with special needs. They lack the proper facilities and environment needed to assist daily living for disabled individuals. Accessibility challenges, poor living conditions, and inadequate proximity to vital services such as healthcare and public transportation amplify our struggles rather than provide relief.

This isn’t just about finding a new place to live; it’s about preserving our dignity and ensuring our safety. Many residents rely on nearby healthcare facilities and accessible transportation to maintain their quality of life. Uprooting us to a place that doesn’t meet these essential needs is not a responsible or humane decision.

We call upon the local authorities and housing management to reconsider this thoughtless relocation plan. We urge them to seek alternative solutions that respect our rights and cater to our specific needs. We need action now to prevent further distress and to safeguard our community's well-being.

Join us in demanding a change that respects the needs and rights of all tenants, particularly those living with disabilities. Your signature can help prevent this unacceptable displacement and pressure decision-makers to find an appropriate solution.

Sign this petition today to stop the unjust and harmful relocation of tenants at 6430 S Stony Island Ave.
