The Issue

Growing up, I had the privilege of sharing my home with many adopted pets. Each one of them taught me to love unconditionally, to care deeply, and to respect life. The sad truth is that many other animals are not given this chance.

Every year, an estimated 1.5 million animals are euthanized in the United States because they are not adopted in time. Dogs and cats, in particular, that are brought to shelters face an uncertain future. Despite this, numerous studies have shown that many of these animals would find loving homes if afforded more time.

This practice is not just ethically reprehensible, but it also pushes potential pet owners towards breeders rather than adoption — further aggravating the problem. We need to reassess our approach and find a better, more compassionate solution.

We propose that there be a nationwide effort to prolong the length of time an animal can stay at a shelter before being considered for euthanasia. Providing struggling shelters with adequate resources and developing programs for community engagement may also help increase the rate of successful adoptions.

It's crucial that we do this. We owe these animals, who give so much yet ask for so little, a better chance at life. Your signature can help bring about this change and stop the unnecessary euthanasia happening at animal shelters. Please sign this petition and give thousands of dogs, cats, and other shelter animals the chance they never had – a chance to be adopted, loved, and cherished.
