Stop Unjust Closure of Black Businesses in Oakland

The Issue

As a business owner, I feel attacked by the City of Oakland, targeted simply because my business is Black owned. Club City Event Space, located in the vibrant heart of downtown, was created as a haven for the community—a place where diversity is celebrated and where our voices can be heard through platforms like our community podcast. But now, like numerous other Black-owned bars, clubs, lounges, and event spaces in Oakland, we are unjustly being forced to shut down.

Establishments like LEVEL13, Halftime, Tease, 3000 Broadway, and NKC have already been closed without any substantial proof of wrongdoing. Now, the beloved space known as "For the Culture," which has been a beacon of hope and safety within our community, is under threat. In a city that prides itself on cultural diversity and inclusion, it is heartbreaking and unjust to witness these spaces, crucial for social gathering and cultural expression, labeled as nuisances.

This isn't just about keeping businesses open—it's about preserving the places where we, as Black people, can gather freely, express ourselves, and support one another. It's about maintaining the cultural fabric that makes Oakland unique.

The systematic targeting of Black-owned businesses cannot continue. We need to stand together and fight against this discrimination. We need proof and fair treatment, just like every other business in this city receives.

I urge friends, family, community members, and allies to sign this petition. Your support will help us keep our doors open and give us the strength needed for the beginning of a class-action lawsuit against these unjust practices. Let's work together to ensure that Black-owned businesses are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve. Please sign and share this petition with those who believe in fairness and equality. Let's make it clear that Oakland stands united against discrimination and support the vibrant diverse community it boasts.
