Stop Unjust Child Removal Due to Substance Use

Stop Unjust Child Removal Due to Substance Use
The Issue
My personal battle began when CPS removed my daughter from her non-biological dad, a man who has never had issues with substance use, does not drink, smoke, and poses no safety concern whatsoever. CPS's decision was solely based on my substance use, even though I am actively seeking help and support to overcome it. This unjust removal has torn our family apart.
Parents and families who struggle with substance use disorder or alcohol use disorder are already fighting a tough battle. The removal of children by CPS exacerbates this struggle and often punishes families rather than supporting them in their efforts to recover. Substance use should not be an automatic reason to remove a child from a loving parent. There are numerous resources, supports, family members, and friends willing to assist in ensuring children remain safe while staying within their family environment.
Statistics show that family-based substance use disorder treatment can lead to better outcomes for parents and children. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, family-centered treatment models increase the likelihood of parents maintaining sobriety and retaining custody of their children. Furthermore, children benefit from staying with family members who can provide a stable, supportive home environment.
We call on CPS to utilize community resources and extended family networks to support families struggling with substance use issues, rather than resorting to the extreme measure of child removal. Parental substance use disorder is a health issue that requires compassion and support, not persecution and separation. Families deserve a chance to heal together.
Join me in urging CPS to reconsider their approach and to prioritize keeping children with their families. Together, we can advocate for a more compassionate and supportive system that acknowledges the complex realities of substance use.
Please sign this petition to stop the unnecessary and unjust removal of children from parents struggling with substance use issues. Let's work toward a solution that keeps families together while ensuring the safety and well-being of our children.
