Unitil is a power company that supplies Gas and Electricity to Massachusetts, Maine and New Hampshire. Unitil has a monopoly of electricity and gas and therefore is doing what most companies do when they have the monopoly, price gouge. Google reviews are one star, and saying that their bills are in the thousand dollar range. In this economy where more and more people are living pay check to paycheck, people are deciding if they should get groceries or if they should heat or cool their home. Another company needs to come and offer their services to help bring prices down. Basic economic theory demonstrates that when firms have to compete for customers, it leads to lower prices, high quality goods and services, greater variety, and more innovation. Consumers are protected by the Consumer Bill of Rights. The bill states that consumers have the right to be informed, the right to choose, the right to safety, the right to be heard, the right to have problems corrected, the right to consumer education, and the right to service and we have the bare minimum of those rights. We need to come together and get Unitil out or get more options for basic needs to be met.
