The Issue

In 1901, Lord Leverhulme generously gifted Lever Park to the public, envisioning it as a place of free access and enjoyment for everyone, forever. This vision was codified in the Liverpool Corporation Act 1902 and Lever Park Act 1969, legally ensuring that the park remains open for public use without any charges. Yet, United Utilities is once again ignoring these rights by planning to impose parking fees in Lever Park and the surrounding Rivington area.

This isn't the first time United Utilities has attempted such an action. Twenty years ago, they made a similar attempt, and thanks to the tireless efforts of dedicated individuals like my father, who travelled to London with 10,000 signatures, they were stopped. Today, though time has passed, the essence of public right and legacy remains unchangeable: Lever Park should remain free for all.

United Utilities is a prosperous company, with its executives receiving substantial bonuses. It is completely unjustifiable to fund their luxuries at the expense of the public's right to freely access such a cherished park. Charging for parking would disproportionately affect individuals and families who come to enjoy the park's natural beauty.

Moreover, implementing parking charges could deter visitors, negatively impacting the small businesses and community life that thrive around the park. These businesses depend on the vibrance and affluence of visitors who come to enjoy the simple pleasure of Lever Park.

We must not allow corporate greed to undermine this historical legacy. I urge you to protect the sanctity of Lever Park and what it stands for — community, heritage, and free access to nature for everyone. Stand with us in showing that access to public parks should not come with a price tag.

Help us stop United Utilities from this unlawful act by signing this petition. United, we can send a strong message that we will defend our rights and the community's legacy entrusted to us by past generations, ensuring it remains undisturbed by corporate interests.
