The Issue

My friends and I, like many others, made the environmentally conscious decision to switch to electric vehicles (EVs) in our effort to combat air pollution. We believed we were contributing positively to our community and the planet. However, we have encountered an unexpected hurdle that is discouraging many from doing the same. At various McDonald's locations, including the ones near where we live, drivers are slapped with parking fines while charging their vehicles if they take a walk around the area, even when adhering to the written rules displayed on McDonald’s premises.

This not only creates a stressful situation for law-abiding EV owners but also sends a mixed message about the government's push for greener transportation solutions. The government has encouraged citizens to adopt EVs, but the lack of supportive infrastructure and fair parking practices at charging stations is a significant deterrent. For EV adoption to be successful and environmentally impactful, users must be afforded convenient and accommodating charging experiences, rather than be driven away by unnecessary penalties.

We are urging McDonald's and other businesses with EV charging facilities to review their parking penalty policies. Implementing a more flexible and understanding approach toward EV owners using charging stations is crucial. For instance, extending the number of minutes allowed on their premises while charging or ensuring monitoring systems accurately record the time and purpose of a vehicle's stay could greatly enhance the EV charging experience.

Current penalties discourage potential EV converts and might slow down the essential transition to sustainable transportation. With the UK's goal to reach net zero emissions by 2050 and ongoing governmental incentives to boost EV sales, we need alignment in all societal sectors to make EV usage practical and appealing. This starts with simple yet effective changes at key charging locations such as McDonald's.

Support this petition to call upon McDonald's and similar businesses to become allies and facilitators in the green movement rather than barriers. By doing so, we can encourage more people to make the shift to electric vehicles, ultimately benefiting our planet. Please sign this petition to stop unfair parking fines at EV charging stations and promote a greener future for all.
