Stop Unfair Dress Code Harassment in Sri Venkateswara Temple Bridgewater NJ

Stop Unfair Dress Code Harassment in Sri Venkateswara Temple Bridgewater NJ
The Issue
For the past decade, I have been a dedicated visitor to the Sri Venkateswara Temple in Bridgewater, NJ, finding peace and spiritual nourishment in its sacred space. However, my recent experiences with certain volunteers and temple management have significantly disrupted this sense of tranquility. On several occasions, I have witnessed how the rigid and often inconsistent enforcement of rules has created unnecessary stress and frustration, undermining the peaceful environment essential to any temple.
A particularly distressing incident recently occurred involving my young daughter, which highlighted the troubling nature of some of these practices. A volunteer approached my daughter and told her she could not wear trousers inside the temple, insisting she must wear a salwar instead. This new dress code requirement was neither documented nor communicated in advance. According to the official temple dress code, women are only prohibited from wearing shorts or cut-offs. My daughter was dressed appropriately in full-length trousers, a long-sleeve t-shirt, and a pullover—well within the bounds of the established guidelines.
This incident is not an isolated one. I have witnessed other devotees being similarly harassed, with their prayers and worship interrupted over arbitrary rule enforcement. It is especially unfair to impose non-existent rules on children who are there to learn about our culture and absorb the beauty of our rituals. Children should be encouraged to experience the temple as a place of learning, love, and spirituality, not as a site of unwarranted scrutiny and stress.
It is deeply troubling when the peaceful practice of one’s faith is interrupted by arbitrary and unfounded rule enforcement. Every devotee deserves to worship in peace, without fear of undue scrutiny or harassment. The sanctity of a temple should never be compromised by the application of arbitrary or non-existent rules, particularly when they are enforced without clarity or compassion.
Temple spaces are meant to be sanctuaries of spiritual solace, offering warmth and a sense of community. However, this can only be achieved when temple policies and practices are consistently fair and respectful to all visitors. Sadly, incidents like these diminish the welcoming atmosphere that should be a hallmark of any religious institution. We must collectively address this issue and ensure that no devotee is made to feel unwelcome or disrespected within the temple.
It is time to call for meaningful change in the temple’s management, particularly regarding dress code enforcement. As devotees, we deserve to be treated with the dignity and compassion that our faith teaches us to extend to others. We should not be subjected to unnecessary scrutiny or the enforcement of vague, unfair policies that create unnecessary tension.
We urge the temple authorities to review their current management practices, particularly in relation to the dress code, and implement clear, fair, and respectful guidelines for all visitors. Let us work together to ensure that Sri Venkateswara Temple remains a place where all devotees can come to worship in peace and harmony.
