Stop unfair data charges. Nigerians deserve value for money spent.

The Issue

Dear Distinguished Senate President,

We, the undersigned Nigerian citizens and telecommunication subscribers, write to express our deep concern and collective frustration over the growing exploitation by telecommunication companies in Nigeria through unfair data billing, rapid data exhaustion, poor network quality, and lack of accountability.

Many subscribers across the country have experienced repeated cases of data depletion far below expected usage, despite paying significant amounts for data bundles. These incidents are consistent, widespread, and have led to financial strain, distrust, and general dissatisfaction among Nigerian consumers.

Our Observations:

 1. Data bundles purchased with a one-month validity often get exhausted within days, even with moderate usage.

 2. Customer service responses from telecom companies are mostly dismissive, unhelpful, or inconclusive.

 3. There is no transparent system of monitoring or auditing data usage to ensure consumers are billed fairly.

 4. The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), which regulates the industry, appears to have made little effort to protect subscribers from exploitation.

Our Demands:

 1. That the Senate Committee on Communications immediately investigates the data billing practices of Nigerian telecom companies.

 2. That the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) be held accountable for enforcing fair usage policies and transparent billing standards.

 3. That the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) ensures subscribers get full value for the data they pay for.

 4. That the Senate mandates telecom providers to publish clear, verifiable data usage metrics accessible to subscribers.

Conclusion:

We believe this issue affects millions of Nigerians directly and indirectly. We therefore humbly urge the distinguished Senate to treat this matter with urgency and fairness, ensuring that the rights and interests of Nigerian telecom subscribers are protected.

This petition is initiated in good faith and in the spirit of national progress, accountability, and equity.

Respectfully submitted,
